Gyro Gearloose is one of the Disney characters whose name was only mentioned in an old installer video and some old trading cards from Toontown Online. In the video, Scrooge McDuck visited Gyro's lab and ended up finding a robot (supposedly the Chairman) that Gyro created. Being greedy, Scrooge connected the wrong wires to activate the robot, thus making it turn evil. The robot then went up to the Manufacturing Machine to create more Cogs. After that, the robot ordered the Cogs to take over Toontown, and Scrooge's fate became unknown.
A rewritten story

The result of the robot initiating an order for the Cogs to invade Toontown thanks to Scrooge McDuck's unwise decision caused the Toon Council Presidential Elections to witness an unexpected interruption that led to Doomsday. The winner of the election, Slappy, was saddened by the first Cog that showed up during the event: a Yesman. Toons, including Flippy, fought all of the Cogs to put an end to Doomsday with great success.
Having felt guilty for the disappearance of Slappy and his invention, the Cogs, going haywire instead of their intended purpose to help Toons across Toontown, Gyro Gearloose revisited his lab that was transformed into Cog Nation and invented a device that would allow him to rewrite himself into becoming a completely new Toon by the name of Doctor Surlee in order to hide his identity and conduct an experiment known as "The Rewritten Experiment" to rewrite Toontown, and defeat the Cogs once and for all. Now known as Doctor Surlee, he traveled back in time starting on October 26, 1998, and thus his rewritten story began, followed by some unforeseen consequences.

- Even though the papers were written by Gyro Gearloose, the URLs say they are Doctor Surlee's.
- This reveals that Doctor Surlee and Gyro Gearloose are the same alias. They've both mentioned creating the same inventions, such as the Silly Meter. Doctor Surlee had also once noted that "Surlee" is in fact his first name, not his last. An ARG on March 26, 2016 revealed a message from Doctor Surlee's terminal, LL-TERMINAL43, with the initials "S.G.", which stands for Surlee Gearloose.
- In the same ARG on January 26, 2018, Doctor Fissionton revealed Doctor Surlee's full name being Surlee Gyro Gearloose.
- This reveals that Doctor Surlee and Gyro Gearloose are the same alias. They've both mentioned creating the same inventions, such as the Silly Meter.
