A Cog Building is a skyscraper owned by the Cogs that falls from the sky and lands onto a Toon Building to spur sadness across the streets of Toontown. These Cog Buildings, each being a specific Cog type, can be up to five stories tall, depending on their locations and level of the Cogs that enter them. Cog Buildings generally have tougher Cogs to defeat than those that roam the streets. Should Toons successfully defeat the Cogs within a Cog Building, the Toon Building that had been taken over will reappear and their success will temporarily be credited with portraits of themselves displayed on the wall of the Toon Building.

Above the elevators are white lights, which indicate how many floors the building has, and the name of the building. If Toons have entered the building and are inside, the elevator door will remain shut, and the lights will show the current floor the Toons are on. Cog Buildings are named after the building that they replace, but the word "Inc." is put at the end, along with the type of Cog which took over the building. For example, if the building called Cat's Pajamas is turned into a Cog Building by a Sellbot, it will be called "Cat's Pajamas, Inc." along with "Sellbot" on the bottom. If the building doesn't have a name, then it will be called "COGS, Inc."

  +
Note that Cog Buildings have types like Cogs do. For example, if a Short Change (Cashbot) takes over a Toon Building, the Cog Building will be a Cashbot building only containing Cashbots, unless there is an ongoing Cog Invasion.
Stories of a Cog Building
The stories of a Cog Building are the number of floors in a Cog Building; each building varies in difficulty. The number of stories a Cog Building will have is based upon the Cog level, usually the higher the Cog level, the more stories a Cog Building will have. The higher stories are accessed using an elevator. The difficulty of the Cogs usually increases as the Toon(s) advance through the floors. The appearance of the Cog Building interior is dependent on the floor, the first floor is a boiler room with boilers on the side walls. This is also the only floor in a one story building. Floors in between the boiler floor and the boss floor are platforms from which one can see dozens of Cogs behind their desks working or sleeping and the top floor is the office of a Cog Building boss, a Cog which level is overall higher than normal for Cogs in the said neighborhood. This Cog is always the one that starts the battle, with the battle starting phrase, "I'm the boss."

  +
Exterior
Toons can find building only Cogs in at least two-story buildings, as the highest Cog Building in a one-story can be a six, and the lowest building Cog level is seven, so Toons can not find building-only Cogs in one-story buildings.

The knock-knock doors turn into a doorway for incoming and outgoing Cogs. The Cog Building is named after the Toon Building it replaces, but with the abbreviation "Inc." added at the end. If the Toon Building did not have a name, it will simply be called "COGS, Inc.". The building type is also displayed below the building name.

The appearance of the interior is dependent on the floor. The first floor of all buildings is a boiler room with boilers on the side walls and a clock over the elevator. Any floors inbetween the first floor and the top floor are platforms from which one can see dozens of Cogs behind their desks working or sleeping. The top floor of all buildings except one story buildings contains a statue of a Telemarketer and Bottom Feeder. The "boss" is an ordinary Cog that is higher level than the rest of the Cogs in the building. They will always greet the Toons with "I'm the boss." at the start of the top floor battle.
The formula is as followed:

  +
:Cog Building multiplier = (f/2+0.5), where f is the floor number

  +
Between each floor, Toons are given 90 seconds to enter the elevator to proceed to the next floor. They may teleport out of the Cog Building at this time, but they will not receive experience if they do. If the timer runs out, they will be sent back to the nearest playground.
  +
  +
Difficulties
  +
The difficulty of a Cog Building is solely dependent on the level of the Cog that took over, regardless of Cog tier, Cog type, or playground. Because level 1-9 Cogs can roam the streets and take over Toon Buildings, this means there are nine forms of difficulties for Cog Buildings that are not explicitly mentioned in-game.
  +
*Difficulty - Equal to the level of the Cog that created the Cog Building.
  +
*Floors - The number of floors the Cog Building can have.
  +
*Cogs - The level of Cogs the building can have.
  +
*Boss - The level of the "boss" Cog on the top floor.

This information shows, for example, that level 7 Cogs can create a five-story Cog Building with only a level 10 boss (Difficulty 7). This means that Walrus Way and Sleet Street have the easiest five-story Cog Buildings due to the level 5-7 range on the street.

Any non-NPC Toon inside the building will be kicked out. Attempting to enter the building when it is being taken over will bring up the message stating, "Watch out! There's a Cog in there!".

  +
Also note that there is no way for a one-story building to contain a level 7 Cog. Because building-only Cogs have a minimum level of 7 or 8, they can never be found in a one-story Cog Building by normal means.
The number of stories a Cog Building has depends on the Cog level and the playground. There is a low chance of a Cog Building forming in Toontown Central because of the low Cog level range, and it is impossible for buildings over four stories tall to form, unless a high level invasion is taking place.

XP multipliers
Cog Buildings turn back into Toon Buildings once they have been defeated, however, Cog Buildings take themselves over if they have been standing for too long, or if too many Cog Buildings exist on a street. The maximum amount of buildings on a street at one time varies by street.

Battling within Cog Buildings can provide multipliers to gag training points and promotion points. This multiplier is dependent on the current floor that a Toon is battling on, with floor one giving no multiplier and floor five giving the highest multiplier.

These multipliers can provide an efficient way of increasing one's gags or even a promotion, especially during a Cog Invasion which further doubles this multiplier.
Elevators
  +
Up to four Toons can fit into an elevator to enter a Cog Building. They will have 15 seconds to enter the main elevator before the doors close. On each floor, after the Toons defeat the Cogs, they have 90 seconds to get to the open elevator and move on the next floor. If they do not go into the elevator in time, or choose not to proceed to the next floor, they will be kicked out of the building and sent back to the nearest playground. After defeating all floors, the Toons are shown exiting the elevator outside the building and watching the Cog Building turn back into a Toon Building.

*Cog Buildings are somewhat uncommon on the streets of Toontown Central because the lower level Cogs are much less likely to take over a Toon Building.

**There is a chance to summon a "Difficulty 10" Cog Building (one-story containing the first round of the Vice President battle) when using a tier 6+ Building Summon. This must be done on a street that naturally contains level 9 Cogs, such as Polar Place (33% chance), Lullaby Lane (25% chance), or Pajama Place (25% chance). This is the only way one-story buildings can exist on these streets at all, or contain building-only Cogs without an invasion. It is also the only building that may contain multiple level 12 Cogs.

Professor Wiggle[src]

A Cog Building is a skyscraper owned by the Cogs that falls from the sky and lands onto a Toon Building to spur sadness across the streets of Toontown. These Cog Buildings, each being a specific Cog type, can be up to five stories tall, depending on their locations and the level of the Cogs that enter them.

Formation

File:CogbldgWarning.png

The warning message when a Toon tries to enter a Toon Building after a Cog enters inside.

A Cog Building forms when a Cog randomly enters a Toon Building. Higher level cogs are more likely to do this. The building can not be accessed until the Cog Building has fallen. Any non-NPC Toon inside the building will be kicked out. Attempting to enter the building when it is being taken over will bring up the message stating, "Watch out! There's a Cog in there!".

Shortly after this, a falling sound begins that can be heard on the entire street, accompanied by a shadow forming over the Toon Building. As the Cog Building lands, it crushes the Toon Building.

Note that Cog Buildings have types like Cogs do. For example, if a Short Change (Cashbot) takes over a Toon Building, the Cog Building will be a Cashbot building only containing Cashbots, unless there is an ongoing Cog Invasion.

Exterior

The exterior of a Cog Building is a tall steely gray skyscraper lacking any color. When a Cog takes over a Toon Building, any surrounding street decorations will be hidden with the Toon Building as well. All of the Cog Buildings have menacing eyes on the top.

The doorway is replaced with an elevator, which up to four Toons may enter to rescue the building. Above the elevators are white lights, which indicate how many floors the building has, and the name of the building. If Toons have entered the building and are inside, the elevator door will remain shut, and the lights will show the current floor the Toons are on.

Interior

Each floor contains progressively more Cogs that the Toons must battle. As the Toons battle the Cogs, more Cogs will come out of the elevators to join. Toons cannot run to the nearest playground while they are in battle, and friends will not be able to teleport to them during any part of the Cog Building.

Between each floor, Toons are given 90 seconds to enter the elevator to proceed to the next floor. They may teleport out of the Cog Building at this time, but they will not receive experience if they do. If the timer runs out, they will be sent back to the nearest playground.

Difficulties

The difficulty of a Cog Building is solely dependent on the level of the Cog that took over, regardless of Cog tier, Cog type, or playground. Because level 1-9 Cogs can roam the streets and take over Toon Buildings, this means there are nine forms of difficulties for Cog Buildings that are not explicitly mentioned in-game.

  • Difficulty - Equal to the level of the Cog that created the Cog Building.
  • Floors - The number of floors the Cog Building can have.
  • Cogs - The level of Cogs the building can have.
  • Boss - The level of the "boss" Cog on the top floor.
Difficulty Floors Cogs Boss
1 1 1-3 4
2 1-2 2-4 5
3 1-3 3-5 6
4 2-3 4-6 7
5 2-4 5-7 8
6 3-4 6-8 9
7 3-5 7-9 10
8 4-5 8-10 11
9 5 9-11 12

This information shows, for example, that level 7 Cogs can create a five-story Cog Building with only a level 10 boss (Difficulty 7). This means that Walrus Way and Sleet Street have the easiest five-story Cog Buildings due to the level 5-7 range on the street.

Also note that there is no way for a one-story building to contain a level 7 Cog. Because building-only Cogs have a minimum level of 7 or 8, they can never be found in a one-story Cog Building by normal means.

XP multipliers

Battling within Cog Buildings can provide multipliers to gag training points and promotion points. This multiplier is dependent on the current floor that a Toon is battling on, with floor one giving no multiplier and floor five giving the highest multiplier.

These multipliers can provide an efficient way of increasing one's gags or even a promotion, especially during a Cog Invasion which further doubles this multiplier.

The formula is as followed:

Cog Building multiplier = (f/2+0.5), where f is the floor number
Floor XP without Invasion XP with Invasion
1 x1 x2
2 x1.5 x3
3 x2 x4
4 x2.5 x5
5 x3 x6

Rewards

File:Bronze Star.png

A Toon with a bronze star.

After a Toon defeats a certain amount of floors, they will get a star above their nametag and be listed on the Toon Platoon. Toons can get the following stars:

  1. Bronze Star (10 floors)
  2. Bronze Spinning Star (20 floors)
  3. Silver Star (30 floors)
  4. Silver Spinning Star (50 floors)
  5. Gold Star (75 floors)
  6. Gold Spinning Star (100 floors)

If a Toon does not defeat a Cog Building for a long time, or if Cogs take over their buildings that they rescued, and the building points given from that building that the Cogs reclaimed are needed for the current star, they will lose the star if they have bronze, and they will get downgraded if it is a higher star. Toons can view all the Toons who have stars on the Toon Platoon boards in every Toon Headquarters.

Each district's Toon Platoon is unique. If a Toon switches to a different district, their progress from the previous district of which they came from will disappear.

Trivia

  • Although Cog Buildings have one Cog that introduces themselves as the "boss" in the final floor, their abilities and appearance do not distinctly differ from the rest of the Cogs.
  • Cog Buildings can have an influence on the Cog types that appear on a street; for example, if there is a Bossbot Cog Building on a street, the number of Bossbots on the street would most likely increase. This is because of buildings spawning Cogs of their type onto the streets.
  • Cog Buildings are somewhat uncommon on the streets of Toontown Central because the lower level Cogs are much less likely to take over a Toon Building.
  • If enough time passes, or if there is too many Cog Buildings on the street, a Cog Building will revert back to a Toon Building on its own.
  • There is a bug that causes Building Summons that implements a single difficulty higher than intended.
    • It's impossible to create a "Difficulty 1" Cog Building (one-story with level 4 boss) using Building Summons.
    • There is a chance to summon a "Difficulty 10" Cog Building (one-story containing the first round of the Vice President battle) when using a tier 6+ Building Summon.
  • One of Toontown Online's many design documents that were offered to the Toontown Rewritten Team by Bruce Woodside for Toon Buildings and Cog Buildings was revealed by former staff member, Jeremy, on May 13, 2020.[1]
