Caesar-would-be-pleased

The development of Toontown Rewritten (TTR) included an ongoing alternate reality game (ARG) filled with encrypted clues, puzzles & development previews. The Toontown Rewritten developers frequently revealed clues relating to the TTR universe's storyline, in a wide variety of media formats. Some were riddles, others were encrypted messages, sometimes hidden clues were even found in images on the TTR site. Over time information was put together collectively, and many fan theories spurred from different possible ideas. The ARG is ongoing, and we're still not entirely sure what all of it means.

Pre-Alpha Build Up

It was comfirmed in a forum post by Joey[1], before the announcement of the Knock-Knock-Joke Contest, that a new storyline would be included for TTR. The relevant section reads: "Yes, TTR has a full storyline to explain everything- even why people have to start over at 15 laff points. You'll see parts of it as development continues, but it is a pretty deep story that won't be fully revealed for a while. While the game is still going to be targeted at children, I want to add deeper aspects than "cogs are bad."".

In another forum post by Joey[2] it was noted by him that: "Heh, the best part is that I've already dropped hints to the story in various places. Just waiting for someone to spark the fire. The hints will become more obvious over time.".

And So It Begins

The  first major clue released by Joey was an image (shown right)[3], on the  October 13, 2013 on an MMO Central Forum thread midway through the announcement of the Knock-Knock-Joke Contest and the start of Alpha testing. It was discovered by a forum member, by searching the internet for images, that this was part of the TTR launcher window image. Unfortunately some members saw the whole launcher image, spoiling the puzzle quest for them - nonetheless the puzzle peice quest continued with Joey releasing another image later that day[4].

Intermission

Sir Max then adressed the people, who had seen the whole image, saying[5]: "Even if you've seen the whole image, that doesn't mean that you know what the image is. There are a lot of elements within it.".

The next post made by  Joey included an image that wasn't part of the puzzle, but instead showed part of the word "Register" on Toontown Rewritten's website that wasn't released at that time. TTR site[6]. Later on, he replied to someone asking when the next update was[7]"I would if I had any.".

Completing The Puzzle

A third image was then released[8]. People began trying to put the peices together at this point, with  Joey replying to one failed attempt[9]: "Very close! The top one isn't the same picture, however. Have another. Take it back to the start.". In the same post Joey released the fourth and final image.

What Does It Mean? A lot of discussion took place after the completion of the puzzle, but no ideas could be proven wrong or right as it was so early into the development of TTR. Some thought that the monkey could be a Loony Labs Scientist, others thought the large monitor and wires and gears on the floor could resemble the making of the Cogs

The Second Quest

A mini-clue quest led up to the discovery of the second storyline clue, which involved Joey changing his user title on MMO Central Forums every so often. One of the first ones was "Gyro?"[10], referring to Gyro Gearloose and his lab. After a slow string of clue leakage, they were put together to form an image hosting site URL[11], with the URL displaying a JPEG image similar to the cartoon style launcher image seen before. Joey replied to the completed quest post[12] by giving the finder an Alpha Key, as well as mentioning: "There is more to the picture than you think.".

As far as known, the second major clue released was an image (shown right), that was first discovered in the mini-quest.

There Is More To Find

After saying that there was more to the picture, many people started looking at and theorizing about certain objects within the image. One member re-posted the image with higher brightness[13], and then it could be seen that there was the Silly Meter, a Presentation Gag and what looked like Sellbot HQ in the background. Joey posted again saying[14]"There is more to the picture indeed, however you surely won't find out all of it's mysteries until the future. Sometimes there is more than what you can visualize.".

Putting It All Together

Forum members then started to suggest that the orange monkey was Dr. Surlee. This was followed by more regular changes of  Joey'suser title, providing more clues to what the meaning of the image was. According to  Joey the answer was clear, and he stated in several posts[15][16] that it's necessary to look at the clues already obtained and put them together. At this point discussion shifted to Toontown Rewritten | October Discussion Thread #2.  Joey soon confirmed some ideas by saying[17]: "People aren't allowed to change their shirts? I totally just didn't use the wrong texture. The monkey and the 3D image and the monkey in the 2D image are surely the same toons.".

Stumped

Members of the community were stumped as to how the pictures tied into the storyline, and what "little detail in the image"  Joey was talking above.  Joey changed his user title to ".$ U $/" and posted[18]"None of the riddles are meaningless". People quickly realised that .$ U $/ was supposed to be Scrooge McDuck's face[19] when he realised all the money he could make from the big robot in the original Toontown download video. In another push,  Joey posted[20]: "You have the basics, now go deeper.".

Toons started to establish that time travel was likely involved in the storyline, possibly so Dr. Surlee could go back in time to stop Scrooge Mcduck Scrooge from creating the Cogs, or even create them himself. After a few more thread pages of grabbing at straws and asking for more clues Joey posted[21]"I have no more hints to give for now. You have everything that you need to solve it. The mysteries won't be unveiled until the future.".

Finally We Get It

After many failed guesses, one forum member asked if someone got the "elusive detail in the image Joey was talking about" right. To which Joey responded[22]: "You're looking at the wrong picture". This was a massive hint that referred to the "elusive detail" being in the  launcher image, not the discovered Toontown image. Almost immediately after  Joey's post, a forum member posted saying[23]":O I SEE IT! In the back of the launcher picture is the assembly line in Gyro's lab!".

That's All... For Now

Although Joey didn't reply to the post to comfirm it, almost all of the thread agreed that it had to be the subtle detail Joey had mentioned.

Joey answered a post by a forum member that questioned if they had all the clues to solve that part of the storyline[24]: "You do. The answer just won't be unveiled until the future as more clues come out.". He also replied to someone asking if they should continue guessing and theorizing[25]"Continue. Some have gotten close, however none have been spot on".

Alpha Testing Begins

The clues and puzzles ending on the image of Dr. Surlee in Sellbot HQ with the machine that created the Cogs behind him was a cliff-hanger, and hundreds of theories were posted on the forums between the discovery and the announcement of Alpha. The second image appeared again in News Post 2A Big Surprise All 'Fa You!. The news post marked the start of Alpha testing, Daily Alpha Updates and Super Saturday Updates. The very last sentence of the news post was "Time is ticking." which is a phrase Joey has used many times before in his forum posts on MMO Central Forums, including his first major clue post of the puzzle piece.

Daily Alpha Updates' Encrypted Messages

Many of the encrypted messages on the TTR website lead to blueprints of inventions integral to the world of Toontown. Many of these blueprints have "Silly Ciphers" so that Doctor Surlee is the only Loony Lab scientist that can understand them. So far, this seems unrelated to the time Sir Max spoke in Morse Code, but he didn't know how he learned Morse Code in the first place.

Every known update with a blueprint has been posted on the 26th of the month. No one seems to know why, not even Doctor Surlee, who makes these blueprints.

Doctor Dimm goes into Doctor Surlee's office to look for a sprocket that Surlee has been working on.  Dimm accidently activates a mechanical arm and the scanner.  Doctor Surlee's Blueprint of The Silly Meter is scanned, compressed, and sent before Doctor Dimm can shut off the computer.

It's a modified version of the Caesar Cipher that uses a computer keyboard as a reference.
All the normal letters are put on 3 rows. You find the decrypted letter on the keyboard, then look 2 keys to the right to find the decrypted letter. If there are no more letters to the right, then wrap around to the left.

While Doctor Surlee is absent, Flippy and Sir Max enter his lab.  Sir Max says they shouldn't be there, but Flippy explains that he's a good friend of Doctor Surlee, Surlee knows how Laff works, and Surlee wouldn't mind him learning how to increase his laff.

The President of the Toon Council is supposed to be the silliest toon around, and Slappy having 5 more Laff Points than Flippy is beginning to hurt Flippy's campaign in the Toon Council Presidential Election.

In Filing Cabinet E, Flippy finds the Laff Meter Blueprint.  Flippy decides to scan the Blueprint and figure out its Silly Cipher later.

Surlee?
That's strange, Professor Prepostera said he was in here.
Flippy, I'm not sure we should go in. How about we'll just stop by tomorrow? I need to go get the news ready, anyway.
Tomorrow, Slappy will be another Laff point higher than myself. I can't have that happen, Max. It's beginning to hurt my campaign. Now help me find where he keeps his notes about Laff in this pile of papers.
He only has 42 Laff points, Flip. That's five higher than you are. Really, it's not a big deal.

Not a big deal? The President of the Toon Council is supposed to be the silliest toon around, and somehow someway he is sillier than I. Surlee knows how Laff works, and he is a good friend of mine. I'm sure he won't mind me learning on how to increase my Laff. Now, please help me find these notes.

I don't know about this, Flippy. This place gives me the creeps. Look at this eye thing. I swear to you that it is staring at me. :

Wohohoo! Blueprints! Max, help me look through them. One of them must have his notes on Laff.
What... What are all of these? I've never seen anything like this. Or this, either...
The mind of a scientist. You know as well as I do that Surlee is one of the most intelligent toons of Toontown. Leave them be - we need nothing but the Laff.
:lockmgr:(alert) Print 2 manually removed (Cabinet E)
Is this it?
Yes! Aha, Yes! This should do alright. This should do toontastically. It's got one of those silly ciphers on it, however... I can't make anything of it. Can you?
Of course I can! Let me take a look.
Uh huh. Yep. Yep, I'm seeing it. You see-
Nope, just messing with you. I can't read this at all.
Sometimes I don't know about you, Max... Look, here's a copier. I'll do a quick scan and figure it out later.
I don't know, Flip-

Notes and Thoughts
  • The :lockmgr:(alert) mentions the cabinets in the following order: DDACEE
  • It is currently unknown what "XTWYLJVRA-UPUAAKOSA-AJHFGTFST-GYTOHTJWB-LEXEOCJYZ-RZBWIFSYT" means (from ttr://assets/XTWYLJVRA-UPUAAKOSA-AJHFGTFST-GYTOHTJWB-LEXEOCJYZ-RZBWIFSYT.jpg).  All 6 segments have 9 letterss
  • It looked like Doctor Surlee was using the Camera Bots as security cameras before Alec Tinn used them in the Toon Council Presidential Election.
  • The Blueprints were in Filing Cabinet E.
  • The :lockmgr:(alert) calls The Laff meter Blueprint "Print 2".
  • The percentages shown are 27%, 43%, 64%, 89%, 97%, and 100%.
  • Sir Max doesn't want Flippy to scan the Blueprint.
  • Flippy and Sir Max were locked in the lab for a few hours before Doctor Surlee came and let them out.  The next day, Sir Max made the SIR MAX MAZE OF FURNITURE(!)[26] and trapped all the Toon Troopers in it for hours.
  • It looks like "docsrch" (doc search) monitors the lab when "me" (that could either mean Doctor Surlee or just any Doctor) isn't in the building.  When the Blueprint was taken and Surlee wasn't there, docsrch initialized the Emergency Monitor Broadcast and locked the door.
  • It looks like "reqparser" is short for "request parser", "cryptlkr" is short for "cryptic talker", "lockmgr" is short for "lock manager", and "EOF" means "End Of File".
  • Not sure what "xferbse" means.

This isn't the normal encryption expected on the 26th day of the month.  No Blueprint was found here, just Sir Max trying to avoid Fat McStink's "Improvaganza!" by speaking in Morse Code. Sir Max doesn't know why he was using Morse Code and he didn't know how he even learned Morse Code. Fat McStink saw what  Sir Max said anyway and invited everyone but Sir Max to "The Greatest Party in the Tooniverse".

This led to  Sir Max using some cannons he found to crash the party.  Then cannons inside cannons.  Then he fine-tuned the the trajectory on the first cannon, applied a bit of anti-explosive to the second, then shielded himself using a mold of pure titanium.  Just as Sir Max was about to hop in that cannon, Fat McStink started praising him for finding his lost party cannons. McStink was so greatfull that he allowed VIP access into his party, along with some free fruit from his new game.

The post was encrypted with International Morse Code .  These "dots" and "dashes" are also called "dits" and "dahs" because of the way they sound.  The most common distress signal is SOS or 3 dots, 3 dashes, and 3 dots.

With this automatic Morse Code Translator, you can turn dashes and dots into plaintext.  (The website also has a trainer to help you learn Morse Code.)  The only problem with that is this post doesn't really use dots/periods.  You can work around this by using Notepad to replace each "" with a "."

First open up Notepad and pull up "Daily Alpha Update: -- --- •-• ••• • | -•-• --- -•• •".  Select the text and copy it to your Clipboard (by either right-clicking and selecting Copy, or using the shortcut Ctrl+C for Windows or Cmd+C for Mac).  Now select Notepad and paste the text from your Clipboard (either by right-clicking and selecting Paste, or using the shortcut Ctrl+V for Windows or Cmd+V for Mac) into Notepad.

On Notepad's Menu Bar at the top, select Edit>Replace... (the shortcut is Ctrl+H), then a pop-up window should come up.  In the "Find what:" section, plug in "•".  In the "Replace with:" section, plug in "."  Now click the "Replace All" button to quickly turn all those bullets into dots.  It also replaces the bullet in the Release Notes, but if you still have that bullet in you Clipboard, you can delete and replace that quickly.

Surlee? You in there? This is Important, Surlee. I know you're in there. Look at the computer!

Don't tell me you're phased by one of those silly sketches again. Surlee!

:lockmgr:(alert) Sending Request Reminder to System Terminal

No, no no no. This isn't right. That sprocket was tilted 8 degrees to the left, not the right. Or was it the up? No, definitely down. 2 inches outward too. Arggh, going to have to replace that.

Like the new security system? I figured after your little break-in I needed to beef up security.

I- I was just in here three days ago. How did you get it set up so quickly?

Hm? I have a lot of spare time on my gloves, I suppose. Now, what brings you here so late? I wasn't expecting you.

Surlee, you do support me and my campaign, don't you?

For starters, you maximized Slappy's toy into a colossal balloon of tooniness using one of your designs.

Ah. I did do that, yes. Quite a magnificent balloon!

:lockmgr:(info) Filing Cabinet D :: Manually Opened

:lockmgr:(info) Filing Cabinet D :: Screwdriver 12 Removed

I was simply helping a toon in need.

In need? Slappy has more Jellybeans than I can count, let alone votes.

I wasn't talking about him. For the love of

You don't even know the duck. Now look, Slappy is a friend of mine and one of the greatest toons I know, but you are a better friend and even greater of a toon. I just don't understand, Surlee.

:lockmgr:(info) Filing Cabinet C :: Manually Unlocked

:lockmgr:(info) Filing Cabinet C :: Manually Opened

The difference is friendship! How would you like it if I went and sold your ideas to some other science company?

There is no other science company. If there were, they wouldn't understand them.

:lockmgr:(info) Filing Cabinet C :: Manually Closed

:lockmgr:(info) Filing Cabinet E :: Manually Opened

:lockmgr:(alert) Print 4 manually removed (Cabinet E)

You very well know what I meant. I don't even have a proper plane to give the toons tomorrow, and he is giving rally rides in his boasting balloon-

There are some variables that I cannot change, Flippy.

Variables! There you go with variables again. I may not have my degree in Supreme Science, but I know that variables are made to be changed. They're made to be tested!

:scanlog:(alert) Searching Target :: Print 4 Detected :scanlog:(info) Doctor Present :: Scanning Print

There are already other variables being tested.

Gah! I don't even know what we're talking about anymore. You're a great toon, Surlee, but there are some things that I don't understand about you.

Trust me, Flippy. That is all I ask. The election is fair, and that is how it shall stay.

:sfx2txt:(info) sigh

I'm sorry. I'm competitive is all. I just know I can make a difference in Toontown. I know I can. It's just, I know that Slappy can too. Maybe even better. I have all of these wacky- err, delightful designs that have been stuck in my head for years, but you always get the idea before I can finish explaining. You provide most of the creative genius in them, anyway. I just don't know, Surlee.

:scanlog:(info) Required Data Present :: Scanning Reverse Side

Flippy, you can make a great leader. There are plenty of toons that see that, and I see that. All I ask is that you trust me, trust the toons, and most importantly trust yourself. Maybe you'll win, and maybe you won't. I cannot say. You have a mind more imaginative than mine, however, even if mine may be more vivid. Use it to your advantage. Clobber the competition.

Thanks... That does mean a lot coming from you.

Now, if you don't mind, I need to get back to designing this thing for the election. There's no way I can finish it in time at this rate.

Alright, Doc. Take care, and thanks again.

That depends if I can ever get this design right... I'll find some time. Just remember not change the wrong variables.

News Post 4.13 - Official NewsMCF NewsWiki MemoOfficial Memo

This memo was unlike past clues, in that it needed no decryption. It was posted plainly on Toontown Rewritten's Official Website. The beginning of the post is presumed to be dialogue from unknown parties, speculated to be Director of Ambush Marketingo written by ???, who is speculated to the Chairman, describes the Cogs' success in the finale of the Toon Council Presidential Election. ??? praises the Director of Ambush Marketing on a job well done and reveals that Movers and Shakers are getting their own Field Office.

To whom it may concern: (And yes, that means you, Doctor.)
Shall we say who we are?
I don't think we even know who we are.
Fair point! Continue.
You may be - and have been - interested in the contents of this little memo. We would have given it to you directly, but you seem to have picked up on the ripple effect you caused and locked yourself away from it.
Are we not part of the effect, though?
I suppose we are.
So by running away, it seems he has simply created another ripple.
Interesting. How do you think that will play out?
The same way it always does. Show him the memo.
This-ones-on-us
The ideas you "inspired" into the toons, Doctor, are not giving them as big of a head start as you would wish. You are merely speeding up what has already begun. We do hope that you know what you have gotten all of us into - and frankly, I'm sure that you do.
We'll see you next month. Perhaps we will have figured out who we are by then, though I wouldn't count on it. Time is ticking, after all.
